I still can’t contain my anger than GM engineers FINALLY got the go ahead to build a very good and modern I6 but then refused to use it, pretty much anywhere and then had the gall to tell their engineers to go ahead and chop off a cylinder because it wouldn’t fit in their small truck. I mean, the Atlas 4.2 had 291 hp and 277 lbs feet. Hell even the first gen motors had 270 hp and 275 lbs feet. The best the 3.7 i5's got was 220/225 hp/lbs-ft. I remember one review summed it up. It’ s too bad that GM had to cut off a cylinder but did they have to take the most powerful one?

If it existed, I would absolutely have a 4x4 I6 5 speed Colorado/Canyon

I’ve been waiting eons for an update to Murilee Martin’s road-racing 1941 Plymouth project with an Atlas I6 and Corvette 6-speed.

The 3.7L made 242hp/242tq. The 3.5L in the 2004-2006 trucks made 220 hp.

I have an 04 Canyon with the I5 and 185k miles that has been very good to me, but I’ve always wanted that I6. 270hp back in 2002 when V6s were still under 200hp. At that time you had to get the supercharged Frontier to get 210hp. Other than the 4.2 not fitting, with the competition so low on power GM probably thought it was a good decision to do a 220hp I5 . That’s part of the problem with having to adapt a truck designed for a small 4cyl diesel. Then of course the Frontier showed up with the 265hp V6 the next year.

That was actually true. At 220hp all the competitor V6s were under 200hp except the supercharged 210hp Frontier.

Before I lifted my 20 04 Canyon and put on bigger tires I was averaging 20-21 mpg and could get 24 on the highway which was really good for that time.
